First attested in the 16th century. The y > e change was the result of hypercorrection when slanted é merged with y in many dialects where in standard Polish it merged with e; the change was further motivated by the suffix -elny. Its existence in Old Polish is implied from the abstract noun subtylność (modern Polish subtelność), attested in a single quote from the 15th century.",
